Ultimate Labs CEO, Kim Lim, B.S., M.B.A. has over ten years of biopharmaceutical engineering and validation experience. Kim, a minority businesswoman, stepped into the world of engineering and surpassed all expectations.

To get to know Ultimate Labs and Kim Lim a little better, we asked her the following six questions:

You’ve got 30 seconds to pitch your company to an investor—let’s hear it:
We are a contract quality control laboratory that saves lives through testing. Help us help you.

What can you tell us about the initial start-up challenges you faced when launching the company?
We happened to start during the economic downturn and there was no outside funding available. We bootstrapped our way to profitability, while learning lessons about employees, marketing, sales and growing pains.

If you knew then what you know now about starting a company, what would you have done differently?
Nothing. There is no looking back, just moving forward and learning from mistakes. It’s better to make many mistakes when we are small and can course-correct quickly so our systems can become well-oiled machines.

What’s the best advice you have for those looking to start a new biotech?
You are only as good as the people you work and collaborate with. Seek out those who know more, have more experience, are braver, and are trustworthy.

What is your view of the biotech landscape in your state and across the country?
It is constantly changing but growing. There are so many new advances in the health industry and it’s becoming more of an individual patient market. There are an infinite number of solutions that can be discovered and developed.

How would you get an elephant into a refrigerator?
Ask why it needs to be in a refrigerator in the first place and, if it makes sense, build a bigger, better refrigerator to fit the elephant.
